Search Engines
Learning to use search engines and proper Web navigation is very important. There are many benefits to learning how to use search engines and proper Web navigation. It could help you/students to find more credible sources when writing blogs or papers as well as protect your/their online identity and privacy. “Students should be taught to navigate the web responsibly, safely, politely, and productively” (Roblyer, 2016, p.177).

Website Evaluation Video

Although this video is geared more towards older students, I believe it is a great video for discussing web evaluation. Not only is the video very entertaining, it has valuable information. It features questions to ask yourself when evaluating the credibility of a website, examples of this, and stresses the importance of web evaluation.

Favorite Websites

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com is a great site to use when looking for classroom resources. I love using this site because it has many free resources that are instantly downloadable. The resources are made by teachers for fellow teachers. Another website that could be helpful is https://alex.state.al.us/index.php. This site has every Alabama course of study and standards for each course. I use this site all the time. When evaluating the sites using the Website Evaluation Criteria Checklist, both sites checked out. Both sites are up-to-date, visually appealing, and complete (Roblyer, 2016, p. 198).

Online Safety and Security

The textbook, Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching, discusses many ways a student could be negatively impacted by improper use of the web. There are many dangers such as online predators, hackers, and cyber bullying. I did not realize how dangerous the web can be until I completed the readings for module 2. It was very eye-opening and caused me to look back on my experiences with the web as an elementary student. I believe it is important for educators and parents to help students practice digital citizenship in order to protect them from the dangers of the web (Roblyer, 2016, p. 174).

  1. I find TeachersPayTeachers a great site as well. There you can find many free and purchasable downloadable resources for you students and classroom. Not only does TeachersPayTeachers have downloadable learning resources, but classroom decor as well. The standards website is a well-known website that most teachers use to find standards to teach curriculum. By accessing this website, teachers will be able to include state standards in their curriculum correctly. According to the textbook, Google is one of the search engines that can be used to search for these websites. (Roblyer, 2016. pg. 183)

  2. I also find all of the ways students can be exposed to harm through internet use to be very unsettling. While security software can be installed on computers to defend against hackers and viruses, it is much harder to defend against online predators and cyber bullying. In our text, it mentions that “in 2010, between 21% and 30% of U.S. youth had harassed others online.” And the percentage of bullying has most likely increased since then. How do you plan to educate your students regarding cyber bullying?

  3. Teaching students how to use the web safely and efficiently is very important (Roblyer, 2016, p.177). Do you have any ideas on how to ensure that students know how to correctly use the internet? I also loved your video. It is very child friendly, and it seems like students would respond well to it. I will use this in my future classroom.

  4. I think it is great that you mentioned the fact that not only teachers should be monitoring students internet usage, but parents as well. Children now have iPads and cell phones at earlier ages and when they are not monitored, harmful instances, such as cyberbullying can occur. According to the text,Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching, "the number of teens who are bullied online is increasing as social networking sites become ubiquitous" (Roblyer, 2016, p. 175). Social media is highly popular with children and teens now, and as parents and teachers, we must monitor our childrens' actions and behaviors online so they do not become a safety or security issue.

Advantages of Integrating Technology in English and Language Arts According to the text, Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching, “the definition of literacy has changed dramatically in the United States over the course of its history, from being able to sign your name, to being familiar with certain canonical texts, to being able to read and write and make meaning from the written word, to being proficient in 21st-century literacies” (Roblyer, 2016, p. 262). I think it is important for educators to develop with this constant change. There are many advantages of integrating technology in the English and Language Arts classroom. One advantage is that students could become more engaged in lessons if technology is incorporated. Another advantage that it is environmentally friendly. It could help save paper which in turn helps our environment. Also it could help students feel more comfortable. Students use technology to communicate with others on a daily basis. You may have a...
