Advantages of Integrating Technology in English and Language Arts

According to the text, Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching, “the definition of literacy has changed dramatically in the United States over the course of its history, from being able to sign your name, to being familiar with certain canonical texts, to being able to read and write and make meaning from the written word, to being proficient in 21st-century literacies” (Roblyer, 2016, p. 262). I think it is important for educators to develop with this constant change. There are many advantages of integrating technology in the English and Language Arts classroom. One advantage is that students could become more engaged in lessons if technology is incorporated. Another advantage that it is environmentally friendly. It could help save paper which in turn helps our environment. Also it could help students feel more comfortable. Students use technology to communicate with others on a daily basis. You may have a student that is shy. By using technology, a shy student could thrive in class discussions. For more advantages of using technology and why it is important to incorporate it into an English and Language Arts classroom, please watch the video below.

Disadvantages of Integrating Technology in English and Language Arts

I do not know of many disadvantages of integrating technology in the English and Language Arts classroom. I believe that incorporating technology into the classroom is never a bad thing as long as it is done right. As educators, we must teach our students to be digital citizens or technology could be used improperly. This would be the only disadvantage that comes to my mind. The video below discusses Sangmun Lee’s viewpoint on technology in education. It is an interesting viewpoint that I agree with on some levels.

Specific Activities, Programs, Etc.

In the 21st Century, the word literacy has taken on a new meaning. This requires “teachers to develop new instructional and learning strategies to assist students in finding, understanding, critiquing, and contributing to multimodal, global digital information using social learning practices” (Roblyer, 2016, p. 262). There are many useful technological tools that could be integrated into the English and Language Arts classroom. The table below features just a few of the technology integration strategies mentioned in the text, Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching (Roblyer, 2016, p. 270).

Here is a video that shows some of the strategies mentioned in the text, Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching, put to use. I enjoyed seeing these strategies in action and I hope you do too!

  1. Technology is a great way to encourage students to be active in the classroom. "By sharing their work, students to are able to comment on or annotate each other's posted works, thus engaging in a collaboration that makes them part of an ever-growing community of learners" (Roblyer, 2016, 266). Being a part of an online classroom community can help the less outspoken members of the class be more involved in class collaboration.

  2. I have always loved the idea of integrating technology into the English classroom. "Education policy has begun to recognize the strength of the current societal forces, mainly globalization and the internet, which are changing how people learn (Roblyer, 2016, p. 263). By the education world understanding this, students will get so much more out of their education, especially through English and Language Arts.

  3. After being in Lit block this past semester, I have seen more of the benefits that technology has in English and Language Arts. Writing papers especially can be a struggle for some students, as they get bored or have writers block. There are now apps that will help you begin a story with writing prompts and programs to edit and review students writing (Roblyer, 2016, p. 267). I have seen many students grow through the use of an iPad. They would practice vocabulary words with excitement because it was in a game format that intrigued them. Through the use of technology, I believe it will help keep students engaged and on task.

Search Engines Learning to use search engines and proper Web navigation is very important. There are many benefits to learning how to use search engines and proper Web navigation. It could help you/students to find more credible sources when writing blogs or papers as well as protect your/their online identity and privacy. “Students should be taught to navigate the web responsibly, safely, politely, and productively” (Roblyer, 2016, p.177). Website Evaluation Video Although this video is geared more towards older students, I believe it is a great video for discussing web evaluation. It features questions to ask yourself when evaluating the credibility of a website, examples of this, and stresses the importance of web evaluation.
